One “must see” is the ROYAL PALACE of the Spanish branch of the Hapsburg royalty. This is Europe’s third largest palace and is spectacular to see with its decorated ceilings and ornate rooms. Having a guide makes it more fascinating as you learn the history and details of each different room and its contents of the approximate ten rooms that are open to the public. It seems that the decorators were competing to make each room more fabulous than the one before! The European art work, Oriental pieces, well-stocked armory, and medicine rooms/pharmacy are also amazing. This pharmacy was where they came up with the different concoctions that kept the royal family in good health. The gardens are huge and lovely and can be seen when stopping by a nearby cafe for some sangria and tappas. The palace was built on the site of a centuries-old Arab Palace from when the Arabs founded the city.
The PRADO MUSEUM is filled with magnificent art masterpieces by Goya, El Greco, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Bosch, and others. You should plan to spend at least several hours there since the museum is massive and offers so much to see including permanent and temporary exhibitions. There is free admission in the evenings between 6:00 and 8:00.
