As destinations for luxury holidays go, Mozambique is one of Africa’s more anonymous locales. Hugging the South East coast and sandwiched between two of the most renowned tourist centres on the continent, Tanzania and South Africa, the country is often overlooked by prospective holiday makers simply as a place where they would have never considered visiting.
A tumultuous modern history is in large part culpable for this rather underwhelming reputation. From 1977 to 1992 a fierce civil war raged throughout the land and took a considerable toll on both human and animal life. Today though, Mozambique is unrecognisable from the place that during the 1970s over 250,000 Portuguese nationals were forced to flee from. The political arrangement in Mozambique is now entirely democratic and in recent years burgeoning agricultural and manufacturing industries have seen the economy there become one of the fastest growing, not only in Africa, but the world. Today Mozambique is a peaceful and progressive place with a people who were largely caught up in a conflict that was not of their choosing or their design. Travellers visiting the country can expect a warm and friendly welcome from a fascinating and personable people who simply want the best for their nation.
Mozambique’s major draw is its stunning natural diversity which ranges from vast open plains and soaring plateaus to what must be considered as Africa’s most beautiful coastline. The beach hideaways and private islands of Mozambique have asserted the country as the perfect ‘post-safari’ destination although in my opinion the wildlife and geographical variety inherent to the country make it the perfect place both to enjoy a safari beach break. It’s an option that our clients go to for honeymoons time and time again.
Although many animals were hunted for food during the civil war period populations of iconic beasts such as lions, leopards, cheetahs and buffalo are on the rise and although it will take time and considered methods to restore these numbers to there once abundant status, the future for wildlife in Mozambique looks bright. Further afield Mozambique’s administrative territories extend out to several distant island groups that nestle in the Indian Ocean. The Quirimbas and Bazaruto archipelagos are two particularly fine examples each boasting an array of picture perfect private islands upon which some of Africa’s most exclusive luxury resorts have been established. Benguerra Lodge, Medjumbe Private Island and Vimizi Island promise peerless levels of quality and service, offering a perfect retreat for honeymooners and couples.
The geographical situation of Mozambique also makes it an ideal place to include as part of a twin centre holiday itinerary. A short flight from South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana or Zambia it is incredibly easy to make Mozambique the perfect end to an unforgettable Africa adventure. Imagine scouring the plains of South Africa’s famed Kruger Park in search of the nation’s famous ‘big five’, including lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos and elephants and then jetting off to your remote and intimate Mozambique Island hideaway; in my opinion perhaps the ultimate safari and beach combination.
Mozambique is the rising star of the African tourism industry a place that has for so long promised so much and now finally seems ready to deliver.
